Last October, SenseGlove and Interhaptics announced their collaboration to streamline haptic design for exoskeleton gloves. Using the, inspired by hand biology, SenseGlove’s DK1 and Interhaptics’ top-tier development and deployment software for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) interactions, both companies successfully integrated the DK1 with Interhaptics haptic feedback designer tool. Thanks to Interhaptics’ drag and drop interface that allows the simplification of the haptics design process for VR and MR content creators while saving up to 90% of development time.

Haptic Design for Exoskeletons

Exoskeleton gloves have several advantages over regular controllers. They give richer feedback to the user, and they can provide a more immersive experience by making it more intuitive and natural. They also allow manipulations that cannot be reproduced with regular controllers. SenseGlove’s exoskeleton gloves make the virtual reality (VR) experience feel more compelling and closer to real-world interactions.

Haptics refers to the perception of objects through the sense of touch to convey meaning through physical contact. It is particularly involved in nonverbal communication. Haptics is a particular technology because it is bidirectional. It involves an action (interaction) and a reaction (haptics feedback). There are several haptics technologies on the market. They are roughly divided into tactile haptics technology and kinaesthetic haptics technology. Designing haptics for exoskeleton gloves is not an easy task. It involves considering the parameters and constraints, including space and weight limitations, workspace requirements, and physical constraints. The Haptic Composer is a low-code graphical design tool that works cross-platform. It uses a drag and drop system approach to ease the design process. Interhaptics supports the DK1 22 haptic actuators and creates HD haptics for the force feedback the DK1 has.

Integration & Use Cases

Exoskeleton gloves in virtual reality (VR) experiences are very useful in various use cases. The first example is virtual reality (VR) training. Industrial training can be extremely expensive and time-consuming to be efficient. Virtual reality (VR) training is a perfect substitute benefiting from all the precision of professional training without duplicating any equipment or shutting down part of the workshop. Exoskeleton gloves with high bandwidth haptic feedback help increase user retention, as well as muscle memory. As an example of use cases, there are virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) simulations with any type of digital element. Another good example relates to VR training. Volkswagen and SenseGlove have created a virtual reality assembly training of the electric components within the sliding door of the T6 van. In this scenario, participants can be trained on the full procedure of all actions in this particular assembly process.

This collaboration aimed to deliver a drag and drop approach for designing haptics and interaction scenarios. This integration is part of the Haptics for VR and MR package (Individual Pro and Enterprise Pro only) and features full integration of the SenseGlove system. It means that all you have to do is create your haptic material with Interhaptics development software and then benefit from the SenseGlove integration in your project to test your designs. If you have already created some materials, you can also drag and drop them directly in your project to use them with other Interhaptics modules. You can then connect the gloves to your computer and feel haptic feedback, as well as hand-tracking.
